Check publication 519, you should have no probelm to do single filing (just for tax purpose) because your spouse is not a RA and your wife won't file a tax return herself. Otherwise, you cannot. When you do married file separtely, though your wife won't have to file, you need to supply her ITIN.
A couple can file joint 1040 return only when both hu*****and and wife are either RA or citizen. However, in your situation, your wife has a choice to be elected to be a RA. She also can choose not to do the election at this time and changes her mind later.
