I renewed H1,now laid off, can I switch to F1

I just renewed my H1 at the end of Aug, and then I was laid off last week. I want to switch to F1, but I heard that I cannot switch back to H1 again because I already renewed it. I have to leave U.S. for one year. What should I do?
