It's a question kind of related to social. I followed a sample for petition letter from a kit bought over internet. You can indicate your need to you friend if you don't want to hurt your friendship and feelings. I didn't ask and get any cover letter from any of my friends though I have so many here, but I did get some samples for recommendation letters without asking. good luck.
