Using AP won't affect

his H1. If he never works on EAD, he can continue to work until his H1 expires even his 485 has problem and he has used AP to travel. This is a topic that has been discussed many many times.
No problem to use AP if he is on H1. His status won't automatically change to AOS unless the travel occurs between H1 transfer.
