No prolem. I just did in mid Oct.(J1 to H1, no visa stamp).
Actually, I read through the relevant document at the USDOS website and found out that it is absolutely OK. From my own experience and others, there is no problem at all. I have not heard that anyone had difficulty in re-entering the USA.
