AOS=adjustment of status

Once you file I485, you are pending for AOS. AOS alone will allow you to stay legally in the States. You don't need H1, or F1 or any other non-immigrant visa status. Just AOS. When 485 is pending, you can apply for EAD for working permit, AP for travel permit.
