I don't have such experience. But here are my suggestions:

1. Make sure Chicago Office is your local office.
2. Some normal I485 cases were eventually transferred to local offices, and I am pretty sure that there must be a local office in such a big city like Chicago to handle your non-familiy based I485.
3. It would be very helpful if you have sent with your I485 the official request for you to submit your I485 to your local office.
4. It usually takes 2-3 weeks until you can tell whether you case is accepted or returned. Calling or writing is unlikely to fasten this process, and should only be used after 2-3 weeks.
