 Studies have shown that if everyone wears a mask, 58% of Covid-19 deaths can be prevented in the fall.  If I tell people that there is a drug that can reduce your chance of death by more than 50%, would you take it?  According to the model, the use of universal masks can prevent an estimated 45,500 Covid-19-related deaths, or a 58% reduction, from now until November 1.  95% of people started wearing masks in public.
