“For those of us who have recently had Covid-19, it’s an unpleasant distraction from our normal lives but we’re a very long way from the early stages of the pandemic. Our intensive care facilities are not being overrun with cases, which was the critical metric back then. In the week ending 14th June, 10,486 people died in England and Wales, which is lower than we would normally expect, and Covid-19 was the underlying cause of death for 101 of them.”
Jamie Lopez Bernal, consultant epidemiologist for immunisation at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said: “We are seeing an increase in Covid-19 across all indicators, including hospitalisations.”
