don't pay the rent and your daughter's roommate have to pay

As a long?time landlord who primarily rents to university students, I want to clarify that you don't need to pay your daughter’s rent. Here’s why:

1. Joint (not individual) lease. Because the lease is joint, the landlord cannot evict only your daughter; any eviction would apply to all four tenants, which neither the landlord nor the remaining tenants want.

2. Responsibility for the full rent. In practice, when one tenant leaves under a joint lease, the remaining three roommates are responsible for covering that share until an approved replacement/subtenant is found. This usually motivates remain roommates to help locate a new tenant.

If the roommates continue to pressure your daughter, she can let them know that she does not plan to arrange a sublease herself and that, under the lease, they will be responsible for her portion until the term ends.
