i thought you had your rental property for a while. if you use Turbo tax, it will tell you what the requirements are.
i don't remember the exact rules on top of my head. just google "real estate professional" you will find out.
if you claim that you are a real estate professional, you better be sure to keep all the evidence that showed you really "worked" that many hours. there are cases saying that if you are managing a investment portfolio, the hours you spent on researching the stock market does not count. so just be aware of that.
