During the Boxer Uprising (1899–1901), the Boxers targeted a wide range of people, not only foreign missionaries.

Let’s be honest: the Boxer Uprising was not some “patriotic resistance.”
It was a violent, fanatical movement that slaughtered far more Chinese than foreigners.

The Boxers didn’t just kill missionaries.
They massacred tens of thousands of Chinese Christians, burned villages, and murdered ordinary civilians simply for wearing Western clothes, using foreign goods, or attending modern schools.
They even killed Chinese officials who tried to maintain order.

And their brutality didn’t stop there. They attacked foreign civilians and diplomats, triggering the 55-day siege of the legations and dragging China into disaster.

In short:

The Boxers killed whoever they wanted, foreigners, Chinese Christians, ordinary Chinese, even Qing officials, anyone they labeled a “traitor.”
It was chaos, not patriotism.
