North Carolina Republicans pass new congressional maps aimed at creating 11-3 majority
Republicans in North Carolina's House of Representatives gave final approval of a redrawing of the state’s congressional district map Wednesday, heeding President Donald Trump's call for Republican-controlled legislatures across the country to redraw congressional maps to help maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives after the 2026 midterms.
The N.C. Senate approved the map Tuesday along party lines. With the House’s vote— also along party lines— the map will be enacted for the 2026 election, as N.C. governors have no veto power over maps drawn by the legislature under the state constitution.
North Carolina currently has 14 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives— 10 Republicans and four Democrats. The redrawn map focuses on making the 1st District, currently represented by Democrat Rep. Donald Davis (D-NC, 4th), reliably Republican in order to secure an 11-3 majority.
