接著文化多瑙的話題聊左右

政治盲我不是真正懂得左右之分，隻能淺顯的聊幾件身邊小事。

上周過節之前，公司有個work lunch, 平時隻是線上見麵的同事們一起吃頓中飯，聊了很多，話題聊到1st generation college students and graduates. 有位60歲左右的白女同事說她自己就是。 她之所以可以大學畢業， 有一個原因是她的倆姐姐的反麵教材。 倆姐姐一個上了大學的教育專業，輟學。 另一個大學的護士專業， 還差6星期畢業卻輟學。 從此倆姐姐就在7-11之類的店打打零工，一輩子生活在貧困之中（女同事原話） 。

我們聽了都特別惋惜， 尤其是6周就可以畢業的姐姐。 問女同事為什麽， 她的回答是，姐姐嘴硬說對當護士沒興趣， 但她自己認為原因是姐姐害怕，是姐姐完全不熟悉的一條路。假如父母或者有個mentor可以引導姐姐， 結局會完全不同。 

前幾年還有一個黑小夥同事，他拿的是4年大學全獎讀下來的。 他有個大妹妹，也拿了我們當地州大全獎，但大二的時候就輟學，哥哥怎樣軟硬兼施，妹妹都不回大學了。黑小夥說原因是大妹妹受了朋友們的壞影響。 他現在隻能每周末給上初中的小妹妹補課，早點給小妹妹一些好的影響。

這個長周末， 我家高中生從學校拿回一個summer camp application的任務，花了很多時間根據prompt來寫essay。寫好初稿後，邀請媽媽給他掌眼。 媽媽給他提了很多建議， 甚至讓他回答第二個prompt時重新選另一個science concept。 因為我的積累，才可以給男娃一針見血的建議，讓我家高中生口服心服。可是種種原因，不是每一個父母或者有時間，或者有積累，給與建議的。 

那麽我到底是想說什麽呢？ 我覺得，也許很多群眾們可以在有些事情上偏左， 比如education, abortion etc, 而在另一些事情上偏右，比如Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets etc

身邊的這些小事讓我看到，孩子們無法選擇出身，而有時候他們的家庭就是無力承擔一些責任。 一個文明社會的社區和政府這種時候可以step in, 承擔起一些責任, 這估計就是大夥兒說的“偏左”。

平時在k-12，隨處可見的都是老師們教練們家長們大量的不計回報的付出。 比如我家男娃在的XC team, 義務教練是個60+的資深美女， 再加上家長們當替補教練。 再比如男娃在的另一個stem club, 每個月有一個周末孩子們會活動一整天，2位老師也周末泡在那裏。 而今年我當了他們的food parent, 找家長們捐款，然後我來下單買中飯和送中飯。 分別已經送過pizza, sandwish platter, 正在琢磨下次活動送什麽呢。

所以在不懂政治，婆婆媽媽的我的眼裏， 因為這些不計回報的付出，美國的k-12充滿了生機和希望。 用我家男娃剛寫的一段關於XC 對他的意義來結尾： 

One of my most meaningful activities is being on the cross country team. I met so many different people from all different grade levels, and I can confidently say we are like a brotherhood. Cross country embodies team sports, as we support and encourage each other to become stronger and fitter. It is a joy I cannot put into words to watch my teammates finish races and improve throughout a season.

I love the intensity of the races where running feels surreal. At times, I feel like I’m going faster than my legs will move me, and the cheering becomes indistinct as I tunnel in on the finish line. The pain is intolerable, but I give myself no choice but to push through and run even faster, using every ounce of energy I have to finish the 5k.

Cross country is also a break from my rigorous academic schedule, so I can take some time to gather my thoughts and relieve stress. By taking time from my normal school day, it has also taught me crucial time management skills that have helped me stay organized. The structure cross country indirectly provides makes me more mature and well-rounded.
