both way should be ok, the only issue is the speed, if you have u*****1.0 port but have 2.0 external devices, you can only get the 1.0's speed. one exception is the tv card, i tried u***** 2.0 card, did not work with laptop with u***** 1.0 port...

the best way is to find the new driver... good luck
