XP and XP SP2 come with UBS drivers installation. In general you don't need to install driver. The possible reason that you can't get system recognize USB devices is because of driver corruption caused by user's faulty operation.
Note that USB disk is not USB mouse or keyboard that you can plug in and out without stopping the it first ! I saw many poeple making this kind of mistake. Also, other software installation could also corrupt the system USB driver. You can test this out by connecting your USB drive to another computer and see if it is recognizable. But becareful stop the drive first before disconnect it from the computer! If it is not recognizable, then the disk mount point is corrupted and then you need to use the maker's repair utility to repair it.
Whatever, you need a CLEAN-uninstallation of the old drive thru device manager (If old driver not clean, system will not recognize the drive). After that, when you plug in the drive and the system will prompt you a message like "found new USB unknown device..." and looks for appropriate driver for it. Then you can put in the driver CD or system backup and restore CD for installation.
