Format

Hi, since i have so many viruses in my computer (Win XP), I decided to format entire hard drive and restinall XP. I made flopy startup disk for XP. I can start computer under DOS, however, I was not able to format C: Whenever I typed "format C:", message comes out as "bad command or file name". I do not why. please help!
