Weird modem?

Turning off the modem speaker, it can only achieve 31.2kbps dial-up speed. But if I turn on the speaker, it get 50.6kbps. Puzzled.
It is the built-in soft-modem in my ASUS M3000N laptop.
Anyone ever has similar problem? why? Thanks!
