Does this mean that a wireless notebook card is exclusively for notebook, but a wireless USB adapter could be used on either desktops or laptops?

If I wish to make the desktop wired, and the laptop wireless, all I need will be a rounter and a wireless notebook card. I don't need to buy a wireless USB adapter. Am I right?
