Look inside......

If you want a wired network, all you need is a router in between the 2 PCs and the DSL modem, connecting them with patch cables (UTP) into a Y-shaped topology. I assume your laptop already has built-in networking circuitry, since newer (<3 years) laptops all have it.

If you want to go wi-fi, you need a wireless router or access point, broadcasting to the two computers. The wireless notebook card is for you to insert into your laptop and the wireless USB adapter is for providing wi-fi connection to your desktop. You need a USB port on your desktop, of course. This way, no wiring is needed.
