after bad experience with number of brands, I finally settled with Thinkpad T60 (three years ago), now I'm still using it daily for work.  Opened it up once, I was amazed how strong the structural design it was.  dunno what model number nowadays, you can buy a decent one around $600-700 new, or buy a used one fr ~$300 on craigslist and you will be happy for many years.
