try unplug some stuffs ... like the network card, extra memory etc. to get into windows. Then do a system restore if you suspect of windows update.

My solution for this kind of unknown issue is to ghost back a system image, the whole system disk is restored to a working environment. If that doesn't work, some hardware issue may exist.

One silly issue for my PC is it can only have one memory stick. Whenever the other one is occupied, it crashes. It was working for 3 years using dual-channel! Well, things happens.

The first thing you have your system back is to backup out your data. That is a common practice so you won't worry about un-bootable machines or cracked HDD.
