If this phone is GSM phone,
If this phone is unlock, borrow a SIM from att or tmobile and this phone should work instantly.
If this phone is not unlocked, borrow the corresponding SIM test it. Phone should work with correct SIM.

If this phone is CDMA phone, dial 611 you should reach customer service. You can hang up or ask the cs people about the ESN.
