If the photos are in JPEG format, it is very hard to compress any more. (JPEG itself is a compressed format for photo).

If you just want your friends to watch your photos on screen, reduce photos to 72 dpi. This will reduce the size of each photo dramatically.

If you want to have them printed, do not change the size but attach 2 or 3 photos to each email.

You may also consider upload your photos to www.flickr.com, and share them with your friends.
