Let me just use the second one as an example -
(1) The screen - I can see there is a faint window logo after it is turned on. That indicates the machine is working. The reason it won't light up as normally does is no power to light up the LCD backlight. Logically the first thing is inverter (because HP inverter is a big "known" - I tried to avoid using NOTORIOUS). I'm not a hardware person so I agreed to the shop technician.
(2) We tested inverter input voltages. There are totally 7 leads, one is ground and the other 6 are:

The problem is the 0 - the power isn't passed on to inverter. Potentially the cable could be broken, right?
(3) We put a new cable on, the voltages are the same. That points to MB.
(4) That either MB or LCD panel (backlight) needs to be replaced will cost as much as a new laptop. So I decided to just buy a new one, but not HP's for sure.
Any other thoughts?
