The other side of the story.

Laptop computers are better and cheapter day by day. While it is still true that you buy the best computer you can afford, it is time to consider what you use your laptop for. You may not need that much computing power some high end computer offers.

If you are an average user, getting on online, watching DVD movie, listening music, burning DVD/CDs and word processing, low end laptop (Celeron) will do these job adequately.

If you do digital photo editing, video editing, running CAD, you would be much better off with high end computer (Core Duo 2).

Do not forget, CPU is not the only part that determines the overall porfermance. Memory, motherboard, and hard drive also matter a lot. The cheap way to improve computer's performance is to add more memory.

One last thing, no matter how great today's computer is, it will become a dinosaur in two years.

Again, buying a BMW every two years vs driving a Ford for 8 years is a personal choice.

BTW: my first Toshiba laptop just celebrated its 8th birth day.
