When you connect both drives, you have to change the jumpers to tell the computer this is a slave drive. Otherwise, the computer may not be able to tell which is the primary. Hope it helps.

I am not sure why you can not reinstall XP on the 4 GB drive. Even you can, I would not recommend to do so on this drive. You basically do not have much room for other programs. Also, it may slow the overall performance due to its long access time.
