3 or 4 times for retail XP, 10 times for MSDN XP

The activation is to prevent casual copy. You can always call Microsoft to activate XP if you're sure what you do is complaint with license agreement even automatic activation over Internet fails.

It's a violation to install an OEM copy to a different PC.
