May I delay my medical insurance enrollment when I start a new j

For example, I will join a company in May.

May I delay the insurance enrollment until one or two monthes later?

Otherwise it will be a waste.

Has anyone done so?

How?  Make a request to HR? or simply hold the enrollment form?
