N years ago, I had exactly the same situation

as you.  I knew I was underpaid (about 15%) but unable to bring it up to the manager. I looked outside and got offer with 23% raise.  As long as you know that you have marketable skill, there is no need to suffer from the BAD manager in a GOOD company.
