The fact that you are still in probation and have only been with the team for a few months, it was definitely a mistake to vent to your director about your manager. ppl in probabtion should always tread light, lay low and not causing any stir if all possible unless they are not afraid being let go. Plus, your manager has been here the longest, longer than the director. Seniority counts in workplace. Also I don't see any sign of your company is getting rid of the manager. So you need to do some damage control now.
Recall what you said in the first conversation, write them down and try to put a good twist on all of them so they don't sound bitter or complaining. Also point out that the confusion you had may have been caused by the lack of communication with your manager on your part. So you are planning to improve that by asking for a reoccurring meetings with the manager so on so forth. All in all it was a coounication issue and can be addressed through your effort.
