Once the issue was elevated to management,  the technical issue becomes a political game and you took it too personal.  (ego).  Why do you have to explicitly tell him you need the freedom to discuss with fuctional?  This is not a technical issue, this is management issue, if he is the lead, just follow what he asked, why you have to challenge that?.
