it doesn't change the nature of the cell.  Hopefully we are talking about the same issue and you undersdand what I'm talking about...

1. Add a column next to the lookup_value and also the first cloumn of the table_array. 

2. Then use the clean function to clean up both 2 columns. 

3. Then use the vlookup targeting with the new columns.
