Depends on your position and what you want to accomplish.

If you are very interested in the position, you should give a true number.  If for whatever reason, you feel the true number is lower than what you deserve.  you may explain that when the time comes.  Probably not in the email.  You may also write down your desired salary.  Again, it depends on your situation.
