If you are truly interested in this position, you shouldn't go for it halfheartedly. It will show and you will have hard time convince people. (That being said, if you don't get it, you are not going to take the rejection personally, as a professional, without saying). If you are not as determined or sure, you may meet your big boss first, to introduce yourself and express your interest, so you may get a feel where you are in his or her mind.
