請教老師: 美國大學允許faculty做不同領域(跨度很大)的研究嗎?

我想在Dept. of Industrial Engineering 或機械係申請CAD (Computer-Aided Design) 領域的faculty位子. 我也做過指紋識別的研究. 指紋識別屬於EE領域, 在Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. 在美國大學的機械係或Dept. of Industrial Engineering 沒有指紋識別研究方向. 請教:

如果我能找到 CAD 領域的 faculty 位子, CAD是我申請經費的主要研究方向. 我也想在指紋識別方向寫 proposal 申請經費以開展研究, 機械係或Dept. of Industrial Engineering的係主任或學校會同意嗎?
