contract jobs are paid by hour

If you work more hours, you get paid more.

Again if you act like someone with principle and dignity, you can expect to get one of two things, (1) you are either treated like a human being, and get paid for every hour of your service, or (2) they don't hire you because they can't afford overtime pay. Don't get stuck in between.
