You parents have their background and thoughts. They grew up and lived most of their lives in a different time, and in a different culture. You need to be sensitive to that and know how to spin such a news, knowing that they wouldn't understand and would be upset. Communication skills are needed everywhere, ain't they :)
I can understand that the previous generation thinks losing a job is disgraceful. So what's important is to know what to say, what not to say, and how to say certain things and when to say certain things.
On the other hand, if anyone who lives and works in the US or Canada still thinks getting laid off is a disgrace, I think the person needs to see a shrink, and I'm serious.
