In many cases saving data is step 1. step 2 is to process data (e.g. do statistics/calculation on the saved data, mining, pattern discovery, etc.). For example, in web searching companies like google and yahoo, they can keep record of user's behavior and using some complex artificial intelligence algorithms to determine which advertisements are relevant to show to the user (that's so called Behavior Targeting). There could be step 3: efficiently present the processing results (e.g. in graphical/intuitive mode) and possibly provide you some suggestions, depending on the field/application.

In some other cases software can help do a good automation job of tedious/manual work besides saving data.

There could be some more that I didn't think of. Software can do well in many arena beside recording and saving data.
