Your recommendation on a new car, pls

We need to shop for a car for our college kid.  He's 7 hours away so we have to get him a reliable car.  We are thinking of a new Toyota Carolla or Camry.  But after my Toyota Sienna went fishtailing on the freeway(but that was caused by a driver who cut me off and I had to slam on my brakes and steering to the left suddenly) and read comments from Da Xia Meng here, I'm kind of concerned of getting another Toyota.  Could you please recommend a couple cars that are suitable for college boys?  Not too expensive, though.  Thanks.
