change it if it makes loud noise.

control arm bushings on passat are rubber bushing about 5 to 10 mm  thick.it mades the ride smooth.

Lift your car to check if it is partially gone (It shouldn't happen, unless your car's mileage is really high). In that case, the joint of arm will damaged. change it  asap.

The parts are cheap. But it requires very big torgue to dismount bushings.
