If one wants a sports car, go with sports car (like Porsche). BMW is not a pure sports car (i.e. not an ultimate driving machine).

BMW is about good compromise/balance, between sportiness and practicality.

In my book, 3 series is good only when equipped with manual transmission and sports package.
