Working on cars can be a hobby, not on the daily driving cars.

I do not support DYI on daily driving cars if not 100% competent. In the long run, for a not-handy or not-experienced guy, DYI will not save money considering screwups and time wasted.
If want it to be a hobby, buy a second car needs works, hobby it and get dirty... it is fun.
