engine could very well be on its own. However, if the transmission is in neutral, engine is effectively cut off from the driving wheels. It doesn't matter what the engine does at this point, the power from engine will not be able to drive the car. Unless Toyota's transmission also has problem, which has not been mentioned by anyone so far.
