State's Attorney Julia Rietz said McClain was on federal parole for a 2002 conviction for delivery of a controlled substance at the time of a crash late Monday night in the westbound lanes of Interstate 74 that killed Yingbo Zhou, 26, a University of Illinois graduate student from China.

Ms. Zhou was one of three women in the back seat of a Honda Civic that was struck from behind by McClain as he drove a Cadillac Escalade at high speed, Rietz said. The car, which was in the center lane, veered to the right and hit a guardrail, then went to the left where it hit a concrete wall.

The other four people in the car with Ms. Zhou were driver Nannan Jiang, 24, a man from Urbana; front-seat passenger Syed Mohammad Nourbakhish, 26, a man, address unknown; back-seat passenger Ling Ling Sun, 25, a woman whose address is unknown; and Yun Bai, 26, also a woman from Urbana who was in the back seat.

Jiang was treated and released from Carle Foundation Hospital on Tuesday. Nourbakhish and Bai were listed in good condition Wednesday afternoon. Sun was listed in fair condition.
