burning oil is usually caused by internal oil leakage. Gasket failure may be a reason. Changing oxygen sensor can hardly create such problem.
Engine repairing is expensive. You can ignore this by adding oil frequently to keep the oil level.

If it goes much worse than what you are describing in future, you'd better fix it.
