Driving lanes (including the most right hand lane) have priority over merging lane. They can help you, but it is not obliged by law. The correct way is to accelerate youself first to a speed close to that for normal highway driving (100km/h or 65mile/h), then decide get in ahead or behind. The rule is you have to make the vehicles on the most right hand lane comfortable without using their brakes.
