Engine Trouble

My car's engine light is sometimes on and off. One day, while driving on the highway, the engine shut off completely and I had to pull over to the shoulder. After a few minutes, I tried restarting the engine and it worked no problem. The car (Dodge SX 2.0) sometimes also cannot maintain a smooth power output and jerks back and forth.

Would anyone know the cause of this problem?
