Engine(transmission) hesitation?

This is a safety hazard. It almost killed me when I rented a toyota camry (4-cyc) 4-5 years ago. I tried to merge into a highway, but could not pick-up speed, and a track was very closely behind. The car suddenly picked up the speed, which saved me, and I pushed the car to almost 5000-6000 rpm. really scary.
