Hard to say whether hybrid can save the environment

From my advisor who is an world expert on battery technology: Recycling of high energy battery, which contains multiple poisonous chemicals, is always a challenge. For a hybrid, battery will loss its performance which results in a replacement for maybe 5 years. If battery is widely used to every car, how many waste do you think we people can generate in the next 100 years?
